Some theories I can use when thinking about my film opening, these mostly apply to contemporary movies.
Theorist one
Vladimir Yakovlevich Propp born 1895 - 1970 a Russian theorist / scholar who in his time was well respected, he was interested in folk tales and myths in cinematic texts and chose to study Russian folk tales, majoring in Russian and German philosophy.
Morphology of the Folktale was published in Russian in 1928. Although it represented a breakthrough in both folklorist and morphology and influenced Claude Lévi-Strauss and Roland Barthes, it was generally unnoticed in the West until it was translated in the 1950s.
Morphology of the Folktale written by Valdimir, Morphology suggests there are only 8 character types in the thousand of tales he analyzed.
The 8 "Sphere's of action"
The Helper
The Villian
The Doner
The Princess
The Father
The Dispatcher
The Hero
